58mm vs 54mm vs 51mm portafilter: does the size matter?
Portafilter diameter does not change how espresso tastes. It changes what you can buy for it. 58 mm is the commercial standard with by far the widest choice of baskets, tampers and distribution tools; smaller sizes work fine but narrow your upgrade path.
What size actually changes
The portafilter is the handle holding the basket your coffee sits in. Diameter sets how wide and shallow the coffee bed is, and — far more importantly in practice — which accessories fit. Because commercial machines standardised on 58 mm, that is where the accessory market lives: precision baskets, bottomless portafilters, distribution tools, puck screens, tamper faces.
Who should care
Care if you already know you are the kind of person who buys a bottomless portafilter in month two, or if you want to reuse accessories across future machines. Do not care if you want to buy a machine, use the basket it came with, and drink coffee — which is most people, and is a completely reasonable plan.
The tier pattern
Portafilter size tracks price, but not cleanly. Every premium machine here (5 of 5) is 58 mm. The entry tier is mixed, which is where the useful decision lives: Rancilio Silvia, Gaggia Classic Evo Pro and Gaggia Classic Pro give you the commercial standard without leaving the entry tier.

Common questions
Does portafilter size affect espresso taste?
Not directly. A well-prepared 54 mm shot and a well-prepared 58 mm shot are both good espresso. What size changes is the ecosystem around the shot: baskets, tampers, distribution tools, puck screens and bottomless portafilters are made in far greater variety for 58 mm, because that is what commercial machines use.
Why is 58 mm the standard?
It is the size the commercial industry settled on, so the accessory market grew up around it. In this database 27 of the 40 machines with a stated portafilter are 58 mm, including 5 of 5 premium machines — the higher the tier, the more likely a machine simply adopts the commercial standard.
Is a 54 mm portafilter bad?
No. 10 machines here use 54 mm and they make good espresso. The honest caveat is upgrades: if your plan is a bottomless portafilter, a precision basket and a distribution tool, you will find more choice and better prices at 58 mm. If the machine is the whole plan, size is close to irrelevant.
What is the cheapest 58 mm espresso machine?
In this database the entry-tier machines with a full 58 mm portafilter are Rancilio Silvia, Gaggia Classic Evo Pro and Gaggia Classic Pro. They are the shortest path to the commercial-standard accessory ecosystem without leaving the entry tier.
